Official: Hungary is the most corrupt country in the EU

Hungary has been named the most corrupt EU Member State for the first time. At the same time, Transparency International reports that the EU has encouraged the Hungarian government to take the most serious anti-corruption measures in twelve years.

For the 28th time this year, Transparency International has produced the world’s most comprehensive corruption survey. According to the so-called Corruption Perceptions Index, last year, Hungary slipped to last place among EU Member States, overtaking of Bulgaria, 24.hu reports.

Hungary is the most corrupt country in the EU

Hungary scored 42 points on a scale from 0 (most corrupt country) to 100 (least corrupt country) in the survey, dropping one point and four places in one year from the 2021 score. This year, Hungary took the 77th place out of 180 countries. This rank is considered mid-table globally but the worst in the EU.

The last place is held by Hungary for the first time this year. This, according to Transparency, is the culmination of a “process of systemic corruption that has been taking place for the past decade”. In 2012, Hungary was ranked 19th in the then 27-member European Union, but since then its performance has been on a downward trend, with a total loss of 13 points.

The top three countries in the world rankings are Denmark (90), Finland (87) and New Zealand (87). South Sudan, Syria and Somalia share the last three places, with 13-13 and 12 points respectively.

The EU took serious steps to fight corruption in Hungary

According to the survey, the most significant event in the fight against corruption last year was the launch of the rule of law procedure. The method imposed conditions on the disbursement of EU funds. This is the first time in the EU’s history, 24.hu writes, that the European Commission has done so, which the authors say is a change of approach compared to the last ten years.

The survey underlines: the impact of government measures to free up EU funds has not yet been reflected in this year’s Corruption Perceptions Index results. They add that the anti-corruption package forced by the EU is the most serious anti-corruption package in a decade and a half. Meanwhile, the government’s aim is not to restore the rule of law but to draw down EU funds.

“If the Commission rigorously monitors the implementation of the new rules, we can expect a reduction in the misuse of EU funds in the future, but not the undoing of the institutional destruction of the past decade and the restoration of the rule of law,” the report concludes.

  1. Victor Orban – has on his own shoulders – his DOINGS – Battered, Scared and Destroyed – the PROUD name of Hungary.
    “Without TRUST we have NOTHING.”
Who TRUSTS the Prime Minister of Hungary, other than the Governments of Communist Russia & China?
Orban by his own – his EGO and ARROGANCE – manipulation of Facts & Truth – has placed Hungary in this isolated – separated us from other country’s – that are Democratic.
Democracy – still the BEST of a Bad lot, especially in Hungary’s case, that sees the reversing to Communistic Governance taken there by Victor Orban.
We the citizens are not the Tragedy, but the Prime Minister – he is the Tragedy, for what he has OBLIVATED – Destroyed – placing us as a country, in muchly a PERILOUS position.
We are in for MAJOR worsening times in Hungary, which all comes back to Victor Orban, who in our millions he has FAILED and our country.

  2. Really, how can the EU say Hungary is the most corrupt country? Wasn’t there a corruption scandal in the EUP? Is President Ursula van der Leyen and her husband, a physician, not earning tons on money from Pfizer? EU supported the use of the Pfizer Covid vaccine. Shall we carry on, if a real oversight was performed more corruption will be found in other EU nations.

  3. Ah mariavonthersa, another attempt at “what about this?” while ignoring the elephant in the room. You will not read this story in Hungary Today, mariavontherea, why do you think that happens? Are you a bot? Are you a woman? Are YOU Hungarian or just another propoganda outlet?

  4. Poor old mariavontheresa the bot always trying to defend this government. Cheer up bot, VO always wants to be leading in something, well now he is.

The useless Sinopharm vaccines and gas from Russia, we’ve paid extortionate prices on both. Of course we had to for the gas, as Putin is the reason VO was “elected” again. Football stadiums, the skill of teams really don’t warrant this excessive spending. They say they’re trying to fight corruption but here it starts from the top. A fish rots from the head down.

  5. I went online to look at the organisation doing this survey and to see how they measure corruption. They use 13 different sources of data from 12 institutions. However they do not list those 12 institution nor do they list data sources.

How can we take this seriously when they do not list where they get the data from?

  6. Great job Bruce – the corrupt are the ones who think they are least corrupt. Same people who insist Covid and the crazy responce should tell you everything you need to know. Getting to bottom of this is the most important thing these people can do so it never happens again. The Covid section of this site was deleted some time ago when it’s never been more important..

  7. Even the common man, the common Hungarian man, knows just how corrupt this country is, even all the “farmer Browns” who voted for Fidesz, but most of them won’t admit it (in public), instead, they’ll come up with reasons why (in their mind) Fidesz is the better alternative.
